Shapleigh is located in York County, Maine.  It includes the towns of Ross Corner and Emery Mills.  It is bordered by Newfield to the north, Waterboro to the east, Acton to the west, Alfred to the southeast, and Sanford to the south.
 

First called Hubbardstown, it was settled in 1772 when Simeon Emery erected a sawmill at the foot of Mousam Pond. On March 5, 1785, the town was incorporated as Shapleigh, named for its early proprietor. In 1830, Shapleigh's west half was set off and incorporated as Acton. In 1846, a portion of Shapleigh was annexed by Newfield. Shapleigh annexed an eastern portion of land from Waterboro in 1854.

The town is home to several woodlands, all of which are protected by The Nature Conservancy.  

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Shapleigh was home to 2,326 residents.  This included 912 households and 673 families.  The average family size was 2.90 and the average household size was 2.54.
