The greater York Region hosts several annual events and festivals. These include Harvestfest in the month of October and York Days, which is a week-long summer celebration on York Beach. The area also offers numerous activities which include fishing, boating, swimming, kayaking, hiking, golfing and biking. York is well known for its fine dining restaurants and excellent seafood.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, York’s population was 12,854 people. This includes 3,690 families and 5,235 households. The number of homes was reported at 8,053. The average family size was 2.88 and the average household size was 2.42. York is comprised of 54.9 square miles of land and 2.8 square miles of water.

The town of York is home to many historical properties and buildings. The town’s historic district contains 49 buildings and one structure. Several York properties are listed on the National Registry of Historic Place.
A notable historic property is the Emerson-Wilcox House, an example of Georgian architecture. It is maintained by the York Historical Society. Other historic buildings include Old Gaol, the Marshall Gallery, the Ramsdell House, the Perkins House, John Hancock Wharf, Jeffords Tavern and the Old Schoolhouse. The John Sedgley Homestead is the state’s oldest homestead that is still in its original setting. It has included a cape, a farmhouse, a carriage house, a stables building and two outbuildings.
