Alton is part of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. It includes five miles of frontage along the Alton Bay, the southeastern point of Lake Winnipesaukee, the southeastern side of Wolfeboro Harbor and the larger islands in the southeast end of the lake. It also is home to the village of Alton Bay, a resort located next to Lake Winnipesaukee.

It also includes 19.0 square miles of inland water, which is the largest of any New Hampshire town.
