Nashua was once an early 19th century manufacturing town built around the textile industry. It was surrounded by miles of farmland, meadows and woodland. The city was first known as Dunstable and was renamed after the Nashua River in 1836.

Nashua’s historic downtown is a commercial, entertainment, and dining destination. The city’s commercial districts include one on Amherst Street and one on Daniel Webster Highway. New Hampshire’s non existent sales tax has made Nashua’s Pheasant Lane Mall a popular shopping destination for neighboring Massachusetts residents.

The city of Nashua also includes traditional urban neighborhoods and contemporary suburban neighborhoods. Nashua is part of Boston’s high-tech corridor, and is home to BAE Systems, Hewlett-Packard and Nashua Corporation.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Nashua’s population was 86,605 people. This included 34,614 households and 22,083 families. The estimated population of Nashua in 2007 was 87,150. Nashua is comprised of 30.9 square miles of land and 0.9 square miles of water.
