New Boston is located west of Manchester, the second largest
city in New Hampshire. With a population of approximately 4,000 we enjoy
the small-town atmosphere yet appreciate the convenience of being only
1 hour from Boston, 1 hour from the Coast, only 20 minutes to the closest
ski area & finally, only 30 minutes to Manchester Airport (the fastest
growing airport on the East Coast).
First settled in 1736 and administered by the Massachusetts Bay Colony
Governor, New Boston was originally a grant of 6 square miles and known
as Lanestown or Piscataquog Township. The name New Boston was finally
adopted and the town incorporated in 1763.
New Boston is home to the Molly Stark Cannon, a reminder of the town’s
participation in the Revolutionary War. This brass 4-pounder, cast in
1743, was captured August 15, 1777 by General John Stark at the Battle
of Bennington. General Stark presented
“Old Molly” to the New Boston Artillery Company of the 9th
Regiment of New Hampshire Militia for their part in the battle. This
artillery company was reorganized in 1938 and is responsible for the
maintenance of the “Molly Stark” and its “security”.
Every July 4th the cannon is proudly displayed during the parade through
town into the Hillsboro County Fairgrounds where she is fired for the
enjoyment of the spectators.
New Boston has that marvelous community spirit that makes it enjoyable
for everyone to participate in numerous activities—whatever your
interests are.
For the outdoor enthusiast there is fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping,
hunting & enjoying the wildlife that abounds in our area. Winter
brings skiing, skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing & ice fishing.
The town has many volunteer positions from serving on several boards,
helping with school activities or coaching various boys & girls sports
teams. Whatever your interests are you will find some organization to
join—or, just relax and enjoy country living at its finest!
