The town are of Barre is 44.6 square miles of which 44.3 square miles of land and 0.3 square miles of water.

Barre was first settled in 1720 and was called Hutchinson, Mass after a colonial governor, Thomas Hutchinson. It was renamed in honor of Issac Barre on November 7, 1776.
