The town was settled in 1776 and incorporated in 1793.  Gill offers golfing, fishing, camping, boating, horseback riding and snowmobiling.  It is also home to the Northfield Mount Hermon School, a preparatory school known for its academics and sports.

Gill Massachusetts was home to 1,363 residents, according to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau.  This included 537 households and 373 families.  Gill is comprised of 14.0 square miles of land and 0.8 square miles of water for a total of 14.8 square miles.
