Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The town was founded in 1640 by settlers from Newbury, and was originally known as Pentucket, which is the native American word for "place of the winding river." The town was renamed for the town of Haverhill, England, in deference to the birthplace of the settlement's first pastor, Rev. John Ward. It was incorporated as a town in 1641. HaverhillIt was incorporated as a town in the year1641 and was incorporated as a city in the year 1870. According to the US census, the city has a total area of 35.6 square miles, of which 33.0 square miles is land and 2.7 square miles, or 7.47%, is water. The city ranks 60th in the Commonwealth in terms of land area, and is the largest city or town in Essex County. Haverhill is drained by the Little and Merrimack rivers. Haverhill is bordered by Merrimac to the northeast, West Newbury and Groveland to the east, Boxford and a small portion of North Andover to the south, Methuen to the southwest, and Salem, Atkinson and Plaistow, New Hampshire, to the north. As of the 2010 census, there were 60,879 people, 25,576 households, and 14,865 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,846.5 people per square mile. There were 23,737 housing units at an average density of 712.2 per square mile.
