Canton is a town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. Canton is a summer recreational area and is located beside Lake Anasagunticook.
Originally called Phipps-Canada, the town would be incorporated in 1795 as Jay in honor of John Jay, who was the first chief justice of the U. S. Supreme Court. Then on February 5, 1821, Canton was set off from Jay and incorporated as a town and named after Canton, Massachusetts.
According to the US census, the town has a total area of 30.3 square miles, of which, 28.9 square miles is land and 1.3 square miles is water. Situated beside Lake Anasagunticook, Canton is drained by Whitney Brook and the Androscoggin River.
As of the 2000 census there were 1,121 people, 400 households, and 273 families residing in the town. The population density was 38.7 people per square mile. There were 476 housing units at an average density of 16.4 per square mile.
