In the early 19th century, the town was known as "The Forks".The town was named Manchester after Manchester, Massachusetts.

According to the US census the town has a total area of 22.4 square miles, of which, 21.2 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (5.44%) is water.

As of the 2000 census, there were 2,465 people, 977 households, and 733 families residing in the town. The population density was 116.3 people per square mile. There were 1,181 housing units at an average density of 55.7 per square mile.
