Mechanic Falls is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, US. The town was originally part of Bakerstown Plantation, granted in 1765 by the Massachusetts General Court to Captain Thomas Baker and other soldiers for their services at the Battle of Quebec in 1690. In 1795, Bakerstown Plantation was incorporated as Poland, from which the town of Minot would be set off in 1802. The dividing line between the towns was the Little Androscoggin River, which was key in helping develop the village of Mechanic Falls. The Poland part of Mechanic Falls was settled in 1830, the Minot part in 1836. The town was named for the mechanics who worked the in the early industries of this original mill town. According to the US census, the town has a total area of 11.1 square miles, of which, 11.1 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles (0.27%) is water. Mechanic Falls is drained by the Little Androscoggin River. As of the 2010 census, there were 3,031 people residing in Mechanics Falls and according to the 2000 census there were 1,163 households, and 840 families resided in the town. The population density was 282.2 people per square mile. There were 1,242 housing units at an average density of 111.7 per square mile.
