Orono is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It was first settled in 1774 and named in honor of Chief Joseph Orono of the Penobscot Nation. It is home to The University of Maine. According to the US census, the town has a total area of 19.8 square miles, of which, 18.2 square miles is land and 1.6 square miles is water. The total area is 7.94% water. The town is divided by the Stillwater River, a branch of the Penobscot River. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 10,362 people residing in the town, and according to the 2000 census there were 2,691 households, and 1,291 families residing in the town. The population density is 500.3 people per square mile. There are 2,899 housing units at an average density of 159.2 per square mile.
