Rumford is a town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. Rumford is home to both an important paper industry as well asthe Black Mountain of Maine ski resort. Originally called New Pennacook Plantation the township was granted in 1779 and incorporated in 1800 as Rumford The town would later annex land from Peru and Franklin Plantation. According to the US census, the town has a total area of 69.9 square miles, of which, 68.6 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (1.79%) is water. Rumford is located where the Concord, Ellis, and Swift rivers drain into the Androscoggin river. As of the 2010 census, there were 5,841 people and according to the 2000 census there were 2,876 households, and 1,754 families residing in the town. The population density was 94.3 people per square mile. There were 3,280 housing units at an average density of 47.8 per square mile.
