Scarborough is a coastal resort town located in Cumberland County, Maine.  It is situated seven miles from the Portland.  The town was incorporate in the 1600’s and is one of the state’s fastest growing communities.

Scarborough is a popular tourist destination and is home to three separate coastal areas.  The Higgins Beach area includes summer homes and older cottages.  The Pine Point area is comprised of sandy beaches.  Prouts Neck is the town’s rocky coastline and is the location of the studio and home of the artist, Winslow Homer.  It is also the location of the Black Point Inn, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Hotels. 

Historical landmarks in Scarborough include the Higgins Beach Inn, Checkley House Hotel, The Jocelyn Hotel, The Danish Village and the Cammock House.

Nearby attractions include the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center, Higgins Beach, Scarborough Beach State Park, Oakhill Plaza Shopping Center, Scarborough Historical Society Museum and the Two Lights State Park.  

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Scarborough was home to 16,790 residents.  This included 6,462 households and 4,678 families.
