Wells is a historic community located in York County, on the southern coast of Maine. It is bordered to the northeast by Kennebunk, to the northwest by Sanford, to the west by North Berwick, to the southwest by South Berwick and to the south by Ogunquit. Wells includes seven miles of coastline, making it a popular vacation destination. Beaches include Drakes Island Beach, East Shore Beach, Wells Beach, and the private Moody Beach. The community of Wells is accessible by U.S. 1, Interstate 95, Amtrak rail service and Greyhound Lines bus service. It is home to the Wells Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farm, the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Preserve, the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit – Meeting House and Library, the Wells Auto Museum, the Division 9 Schoolhouse Museum, the Wells Harbor Community Park and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. Wells also offers many recreational opportunities. These consist of fishing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and surfing. It also offers hiking paths, biking and golf courses. It is also home to many craft fairs throughout the year. The town of Wells contains an area of 57.6 square miles of land, and 0.5 square miles of water. According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Wells was 9,589 people. As of the census of 2000 there were 4,004 households and 2,690 families. There were 7,794 homes and the average household size was 2.35.
