The town of York is located in York County, in the southwest region of Maine, close to the border of New Hampshire. It runs along the Atlantic Ocean on the Gulf of Maine. The town of York is comprised of York Beach, York Harbor, York Village and Cape Neddick. Together, these villages are referred to as the “The Yorks”. The town of York is known for being a fashionable resort destination. It is home to three sandy beaches, Mount Agamenticus, Ft. McClary, the historic Nubble lighthouse, three golf courses, Maine’s largest zoo, an amusement park and the Kittery Historical Naval Museum. York was rated by Money Magazine as one of the “top ten places to vacation in the United States”. It was also rated the “best family vacation destination” by Family Fun magazine for the last three years. In the center of York Village are clusters of historic 18th and 19th century buildings that have been retained as museums. These buildings represent the shingle style of Gilded Age architecture. They are open for public tours and can be found along York Street and Lindsay Road. The greater York Region hosts several annual events and festivals. These include Harvestfest in the month of October and York Days, which is a week-long summer celebration on York Beach. The area also offers numerous activities which include fishing, boating, swimming, kayaking, hiking, golfing and biking. York is well known for its fine dining restaurants and excellent seafood. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, York’s population was 12,854 people. This includes 3,690 families and 5,235 households. The number of homes was reported at 8,053. The average family size was 2.88 and the average household size was 2.42. York is comprised of 54.9 square miles of land and 2.8 square miles of water.
