Alstead is located in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. The town is comprised of 38.9 square miles of land and 0.5 square miles of water. It is drained by the Cold River and lies entirely within the Connecticut River watershed. To the east of Alstead is Lake Warren. Alstead was chartered in 1735 and incorporated in 1763. The town had joined Vermont in 1781, during the Revolutionary War, but returned to New Hampshire the following year. Alstead was the location of New Hampshire’s first paper, and is therefore also known as the Paper Mill Village. As of the census of 2000 there were 771 households, 534 families and 941 housing units.
