The town is home to the Shedd-Porter Memorial Library, which was builit in 1909-1910.  The library was a gift to the towns of Alstead and Langdon by the native son, John G. Shedd, President of Chicago’s Marshall Field's department stores.  Charles M. Vilas, another native son, donated a school building, a public recreation area, and Cheshire County’s only carillon.
