Canterbury is located in Merrimack County, New Hampshire.  The town includes miles of frontage along the Merrimack River.  It is in close proximity to Routes 4, 89 and 93.

Canterbury is home to the Shaker Village, a National Historic Landmark.  The site includes a museum, 26 original Shaker buildings, 4 reconstructed buildings and 694 acres of gardens, ponds, fields and forest.  The town is also home to the Shaker State Forest and the Ayers State Forest.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Canterbury was home to 1,979 residents.  This included 749 households and 590 families.  The average family size was 2.91 and the average household size was 2.64.  Canterbury is comprised of 43.8 square miles of land and 0.8 square miles of water.
