Charlestown Real Estate

Charlestown is located in Sullivan County, New Hampshire.  It includes the villages of North Charlestown, South Charlestown and Hemlock Center. The town is home to Hubbard State Forest and the headquarters of the Student Conservation Association.

In 1781, Charlestown briefly joined Vermont because of dissatisfaction with treatment by the New Hampshire government. Returning at the insistance of George Washington, it was incorporated in 1783.

Charlestown is known for its fine architecture and historic properties.  The town’s Main Street is home to 63 buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  These historic properties include the Gothic Revival South Parish Church built in 1842, a reproduction of Fort at Number Four (a historical marker), St. Luke’s Church and the Italianate Town Hall.  At least ten buildings in Charlestown’s Historic District predate 1800.  Historic buildings and structures include schools, churches, houses, inns, meetinghouses, stores and monuments.  Architectural styles represented are Federal Style, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Charlestown was home to 1,145 residents.  This included 486 households and 301 families.  Charlestown is comprised of 35.8 square miles of land and 2.2 square miles of water.  The population at the 2010 census was 1,152..
