Fitzwilliam is a typical New England Village, located in Cheshire County, in the southwestern corner of New Hampshire. It has the highest elevation of any village in New Hampshire and lies entirely within the Connecticut River watershed. Fitzwilliam is less than five miles from Mt. Monadnock, a short 20 minute drive from Keene, and just over 70 miles from Boston. The town is comprised of 34.6 square miles of land and 1.4 square miles of water.
The town includes many historic homes and landmarks. These include the Fitzwilliam Inn, a 200 year old landmark, the Amos J. Blake House and a total of twelve homes that are part of the National Register for Historic Places. In fact, most houses in the village center date back to 1850.
Fitzwilliam is known for its antique stores, and small businesses. The town offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as blueberry picking, mountain climbing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. It also offer a variety of theatre and music through the Colonial Theatre in nearby Keene, the Peterborough Players summer theatre and the Fitzwilliam Town Hall. Fitzwiilliam is also home to Rhododendron State Park.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Fitzwilliam’s population at the time was 2,141. This included 836 households, and 586 families.
