Milan is a town in Coos County, New Hampshire, United States. The city's name is pronounced differently from the English name for the Italian city of the same name. Originally named Paulsburg in 1771 after Paul Wentworth, the town was incorporated on December 16, 1824. In that year, Governor Levi Woodbury authorized a name change to Milan, in honor of Milan Harris. According to the US census, the town has a total area of 64.6 square miles, of which 63.8 square miles is land and 0.8 square miles, or 1.17%, is water. As of the 2010 census, there were 1,337 people residing in the town, and according to the 2000 census there were 532 households, and 388 families residing in the town. The population density was 21.6 people per square mile. There were 756 housing units at an average density of 12.2 per square mile.
