Don't Forget to Consider These Things When Moving to a New State

Moving to a New State

Our real estate agents love welcoming new residents who are relocating from another state. While every move is exciting, there's something really special about starting the next phase of your life in a completely new location.

However, moving from one state to another also requires a bit more thought. Here are a few of the most important things to consider before taking the plunge.

  1. The Job Market
If you haven't already secured a job in the new stateyou're considering, you'll want to take a close look at the current local employment opportunities. The last thing you want to do is uproot your entire life only to find that you're not able to make a living in your new home state.
  2. Cost of Living
Depending on where you're planning to move, the cost of living -- which includes things like utilities, groceries, and housing -- may be much higher or lower than where you currently live. Make sure you know what to expect and that your new salary will cover these basic expenses.
  3. Taxes
The state and local tax rates in your new location will also have a major impact on how far your dollars will go. Do yourself a favor and learn about your tax obligations before you make your move.
  4. Weather
This is another big factor that may determine whether you're really happy living in a certain state. If you're moving somewhere with harsh winters or blistering summer heat, make sure you're prepared to deal with it. Often, just ensuring that you have the right clothes and the best type of vehicle can go a long way towards keeping you comfortable.
  5. Culture
You'll want to take the time to learn more about the local culture and area traditions. This could include finding out more about local theaters and museums, learning when and where the city's big festivals occur, or even just discovering the best area farmers markets. The more time you spend learning about your new home, the more likely you are to enjoy it right from the get-go.
  6. Commute
While some areas in the U.S. are known for quick and easy commutes, other states are more spread out or have high traffic congestion. Since your work and school commutes will likely be a major part of your life for many years, make sure you know what to expect and you're comfortable with it before you make your move. It might even be a good idea to travel to the state and rent a car for a few days. Practice going from the neighborhoods you're considering to your job site to see what it's really going to be like.
  7. Moving Costs
When you're moving across the state, you can't just gather up a few friends with pickup trucks and call it a day. You'll need to spend some extra time and effort ensuring that all of your belongings are packed up safely. Then you'll need to either rent a truck to drive to your new home or hire a moving company. Each of these options has its own pros and cons, and they both come with a cost. Weigh your options carefully, then make sure you budget enough time and money so you can enjoy a stress-free move.
