7 Chores You Shouldn't Forget to do Yearly

7 Chores do Yearly

Owning your own home is a valuable step in building your equity and creating security for yourself and your family -- no matter the shape or size. Part of homeownership is maintaining that investment through required chores and maintenance. Don't lose value simply because you don't know what to do. The start of a new year is the perfect time to keep tabs of chores you should be doing once a year. Our REALTORS®have assembled seven chores you shouldn't forget to do yearly, to help you keep your home in top shape.

  1. Clean or Replace Lightbulbs
It might seem a little strange, but starting by wiping off your lightbulbs will let in a tremendous amount of light -- easily more than you would expect. This shining light will let you better notice other areas of your home that need attention, and it's also a good reminder to change a few bulbs. Also, it's always a good idea for your health and safety to remove extra dust and debris so you can breathe better and reduce fire hazards too.
  2. Deep Clean Carpets and Upholstery
And speaking of dust and allergens, you'll want to do a yearly deep clean of upholstery. Go beyond carpet cleaning to make sure any food or pet stains get removed and provide an overall fresher feel to your home. Also, proper cleaning can help improve the lifetime of your furniture.
  3. Don't Forget the Mattress
While this is an area you will want to closely follow your manufacturer's instructions, make sure you give your mattress and cover a good cleaning once a year. Take this opportunity to flip it to the opposite side too.
  4. Clean and Clear the Cupboards
Nothing will attract unwanted pests like ants or mice faster than abandoned food crumbs. Pests can be an expensive (and unpleasant) problem. Make sure to take the opportunity to clean and stock your kitchen cupboards, removing all traces of spilled food.
  5. Clean Window Sills and Seals
You need to remove the buildup of dirt and debris that lines window frames and metal door linings. Built-up grime can contribute to poorly moving sliders and loosened or weakened seals.
  6. Replace Filters
Check and replace filters in your heating and air conditioning devices yearly. It's easy to remember this with the change of seasons for many people. A clogged filter can significantly increase your heating and air conditioning bills, as well as put unwanted strain on your appliances. Besides, you don't want to breathe in all that, do you?
  7. Don't Forget to Check Outside
As part of your chores, don't forget to add the outdoor tasks that might not make it onto your maintenance inspection list. Wipe down all your patio furniture, and winterize and grills, firepits, or pools that might not be used soon. Use this as an opportunity to double-check your regular inspection for leaks or backed-up gutters and drainage, as sometimes new problems can arise over time.
