When you think of the word "picturesque," Brunswick should come to mind!
Cumberland County has been settled since 1628, so it's no surprise history is just about everywhere you look. The Androscoggin Swinging Bridge is one example of the many delights you can find around the area – and it's more than a century old.
The Distinctive Androscoggin Swinging Bridge is a Symbol of Maine
The swinging bridge with the odd name was first established in 1892 by the John A. Roebling's Sons Company, which was well-known as one of the top designers of wire rope suspension bridges anywhere in the United States.
It connects the twin communities of Brunswick and Topsham. Many Brunswick residents love to visit Topsham, a town of about 8,800 people. It's known for its nature preserve areas as well as for the annual Topsham Fair celebrating local agriculture.
The swinging bridge is strictly a pedestrian bridge, and it spans the breathtaking Androscoggin River. It was originally built as an easytransportation option for local mill workers, but now it is one of the most iconic sights you'll find along this beloved river.
The bridge was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. More recently, in 2007, there was a reopening and re-dedication ceremony in honor of the landmark. It has also been studied extensively by modern engineers as a remarkable example of its type.
AndroscogginRiverwalk is Coming Soon to Brunswick – So Should You
Over the last few years, the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge received a lot of attention due to concerns that it would eventually be replaced. There's even a local nonprofit organization that's fully dedicated to maintaining the bridge. Luckily, their worries may be over: It has never been more popular!
Over the next few years, the surrounding riverside will be revitalized into a pedestrian relaxation area that will make it simpler to enjoyviews of the Androscoggin. At the same time, it will be made more accessible for jogging, hiking, bicycling, and much more.
The Riverwalk is just one example of beautification projects in the Brunswick area.
Sidewalks and guardrails will make the riverside a dream to visit from the Brunswick area to historic Topsham. At the same time, the utmost care is being taken to maintain the course of the river and ensure nothing subtracts from its natural beauty.
