Get Your Home Ready to Sell This Spring

Get Your Home Ready to Sell This Spring
Winter isn't over just yet, but it will be here before you know it. Spring is a great time to sell your home. Making your home buyer-ready before the season starts will ensure that you're prepared to list it before the market gets overloaded. These ten tips from our real estate agents make it easy to prepare your home for sale and help your home look its best.

  1. Evaluate Your Home's Condition – Inside & Out
Before you begin any projects, take a walk throughout your home with a friend to get an objective opinion about what is appealing and what isn't. Make sure to examine the exterior, too. If your home looks its best inside and out, it's more likely to draw buyers in to look around.

  2. Remove Clutter & Get Organized
The living room, kitchen and master bedroom are good places to start tackling clutter. Remove personal items such as family photographs and knick knacks and get rid of piles of old magazines or anything else you haven't used recently. Organize the items you want to keep using storage containers, baskets, boxes, and cubbies.

  3. Clean Closets & Cabinets
The vast majority of buyers want to check out storage spaces, so making them neat and tidy is a must. Now is a good time to donate or sell any clothes or shoes you haven't worn in a year. Don't overload closets—if you have a lot of things you're going to keep, considering putting them in storage or at a loved one's house.

  4. Remove (and Move) Furniture
You want your rooms to appear large and open; not crowded with furniture. Moving couches, chairs, and tables away from the walls and arranging it in cozy formations that are perfect for conversation creates an intimate, inviting environment buyers will love.

  5. Make it Fresh & Bright
Painting the walls with neutral colors such as beiges and grays allows potential buyers to envision their pictures and art on the walls. Lighting is a vital part of making your home look its best, so consider replacing dull overhead lights with track lighting. Replacing old light fixtures and switch plates is an affordable way to create an updated look.

  6. Wash Windows & Change Window Treatments
It's important to wash windows before showing your home thoroughly. Change window coverings to light, airy sheers for spring.

  7. Give Your Floors Some Love
Taking the time to make your floors look great can add to the "wow" factor of your home. Place throw rugs and area rugs strategically if you do need to hide any small imperfections. Replacing old carpeting will make your house smell better and look fresher. Make sure to scrub all tile and grout as well.

  8. Tackle Spring Cleaning Now
Give your home a deep cleaning that includes washing walls, baseboards, and hard-to-reach places. If you're not the cleaning type, hiring a service to do the job right is well worth it.

  9. Clean Gutters & Downspouts
Clogged and dirty gutters are unappealing and have the potential to cause serious problems like flooding and roof damage. Cleaning gutters and downspouts will show buyers that you've made an effort to maintain your home.

  10. Create Curb Appeal
The vibrant beauty of spring flowers such as daffodils, tulips, and irises raises everyone's spirits after a long winter. If you didn't plant any bulbs in the fall, buy flowers in containers and place them near walkways and on porches or decks.
