How to Obtain a Real Estate License

Entry into the real estate profession takes preparation. As with other professions, licensing is required. Licensing requirements and costs vary from state to state, but generally range between $1,000-$2,000 for start-up costs, such as pre-licensing classes, the state licensing exam, and real estate association memberships.?

Step One:

Complete the required credit hours as outlined by your state:

    • New Hampshire - 40 hours

    • Maine - 55 hours

    • Vermont - 40 hours

    • Massachusetts - 40 hours

NH and Maine Pre-licensing courses are available through the Real Estate Institute of New England

Step Two:

Complete a prep class

?Not everyone does this, but it is recommended, as in most cases it provides an outline of what to expect when taking the real estate licensing exam in your state.

Step Three:

Apply, take and pass the real estate licensing exam

?Now that you are prepared, you can schedule and take your licensing exam. Typically, this is administered in a testing center, and you get the results right away.
